PRAY FOR ORLANDO
For days now I’ve debated about whether or not I should pen my thoughts on paper – or in this case on computer screen for the world to read. Orlando has just experienced the single worst mass murder in the history of our country and the worst since 9/11 and there is so many things that just seem wrong in how it is being covered. This is a tragic loss of lives. This has affected families, friends, co-workers of innocent victims who did nothing more than be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is not the time for lines to be drawn over gun control, gay rights, or allow the positioning of politicians to use this as a launchpad to gain influence in the community. Yet, here I am crying out to be heard at the same exact moment.
I am an evangelist. I travel the globe teaching the message of Jesus and speaking about salvation and offering a way between a future of darkness or of light. I am not trying to influence a political agenda in any way. I am however, hoping that we all can get back on message that this is a time for mourning these lost lives, these lost futures, … opportunities and that we can come together to pray for each and every person on this earth who was affected.
Orlando was my home. My son was born in Orlando. I have many ties to the community. I love Orlando and come to visit many times a year to meet with my friends and connections made over many years.
When I travel, I am blessed to have the opportunity to preach to thousands of people at a time and God blesses me with influence. But, this is not about me because without Him, I am nothing. So at the risk of being another voice at a time when there seems to be too many speaking and much of it noise, I felt the need to speak my heart about the spiritual side of what has happened.
To all the grieving families and friends of the victims of this absolute horrific, senseless and purely evil tragedy, and to the entire city of Orlando, a city I deeply love (my family and I lived there for 7 years and my son was born there), I hope that maybe my words can shed a little light on this very dark, depraved and desperate world in which we live. In the end, my aim is to somehow restore hope to all who’ve seemed to have lost it. If you find yourself throwing your hands up and saying, “I give up, there’s no way a loving God can continue to allow senseless tragedy’s like this to continue to take place.” Or “I simply just don’t understand! Why? Why do these things continue to take place?” Why is it that there are a small group of radical, self described radical, religious zealots, that are hell bent on unleashing horrific terror on anyone and everyone who seems to live or believe differently then they do? How can these things be?
I’ve had the privilege of traveling to nearly 30 countries, some of them very dark and very dangerous. But the one common thread that I’ve noticed through all of my travels, no matter what country I’ve been in, whether if it’s first world or third world, is that there is evil everywhere. Evil has no prejudices! It doesn’t matter if your black or white, Hispanic or Asian, rich or poor, educated or uneducated, attractive or not, it doesn’t matter the country of your residence, or what side of the train tracks you grew up on, evil is a despicable cancer that wants nothing more than to kill/destroy a society!
This evil started all the way back with the first family Adam and Eve and spread so rampantly that God decided that it had become so bad that He was actually grieved in His heart that He had created man (Gen.6:6). Therefore, He decided the only way to remedy this terrible situation, was to start over with the family of Noah. The scriptures give us a little insight of what life was actually like back then. (Gen.6:5-7 NLT) – 5 The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. 6 So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. 7 And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.”
Some four thousand years later, Jesus made reference back to this very time period, in comparison to the time in which He was currently living in. The physician St. Luke puts it this way, (LK.17:26-27NLT)
26 “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 27 In those days, the people enjoyed banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat and the flood came and destroyed them all.
The great news is that God is no longer in the business of destroying creation. This is actually the reason He sent His one and only Son into the world, that whosoever believes in Him, will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16)! The very next verse is a verse that most of us have read but maybe have never spent a moment to actually park our eyes and minds on it because of the weight and heaviness of the verse right before it. But listen to this scripture, I would venture to say that it’s just as heavy with tremendous Heavenly, eternal, encouraging and joyous implications! Take a look, (John 3:17) 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. / Within these two verses we clearly see the heart of God on full display – Jesus has come for one reason, not to judge or condemn BUT TO SAVE!!!
- You see, evil is nothing new. Matter of fact, the wisest man in the scriptures, King Solomon, states, 9 History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. 10 Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. 11 We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now. (Ecc.1:9-11).
Stand Together Orlando
In the Gospel of John, chapter 10 verse 10 – Jesus states that “the enemy has come for one purpose and one purpose only and that is to steal, to kill and ultimately destroy” but the good news is that it doesn’t end there. Jesus said but “I’ve come to give you and everyone wants it, life and life more abundantly!” Now it’s pretty plain for all to see, there are only two roles that rule society, good and evil, life and death! The question is: which role will we be ruled by? Which role will we choose. You may be thinking, “Bernie what kind of elementary question is that? Isn’t the answer obvious?” To you and I it may be but to others, not so much! You see the people that commit these unspeakable, atrocious acts of terror actually justify it by saying or thinking that they are actually doing some sort of good! As unbelievable as that is to most of us, somehow it makes sense to these people are filled with unspeakable evil. You see the great apostle Paul when writing to the church in Ephesus put it this way (Eph.6:12-13), “12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” / Listen to what Paul says, we war not westle flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly Then he gives us the solution to combat this evil epidemic. He instructs us to take up the whole armor of God (I don’t have enough time to get into that but I feel confident most us know what Paul is referring to) and when it’s all said and done, we are to stand! Stand firmly on Gods word! No matter what comes our way, no matter what we face, both good and evil, “STAND” and don’t cower to this evil and wicked world. Stand on Gods unspeakable and unfathomable love, stand on hope, stand in faith knowing that no matter how dark the night is tonight, the sun promises to rise tomorrow and it will certainly be brighter and better than today! Finally, somehow, someway let’s find the courage to stand together in solidarity!
I am praying for you Orlando.
